Digital screening: find
your ancestors in the Netherlands
Our starting point in ancestry research is usually a 10-hour digital screening. This screening includes online research in various archives, library databases and other online sources, such as Delpher (for historical newspapers) and the Arolson Archives (WW2). After our digital screening, we will provide you with a complete digital report via email, which includes scans of or links to relevant documents related to your Dutch family roots. Our report also includes suggestions for further research, both digital and on-site.
Digital check: researching
Dutch ancestors
You may have already started tracing your heritage through your own research. However, researching your Dutch ancestors can be challenging due to language barriers and the sheer amount of information available online. That’s why it may be a good idea to hire a Dutch genealogist to help make sense of your research. We offer a 10-hour digital check as part of our Dutch genealogy services. During this check, we can review and supplement any information you may have already found, using our extensive experience and broad network in historical research.
Search for photos and
trace your heritage
You can also hire a genealogist to help you search for historical photos. Many archives and historical institutions in the Netherlands have (online) photo databases with millions of photos from different periods of history. Dutch Family Roots can help you root through these databases and find photos related your ancestors in the Netherlands, like photos of houses, companies, streets or places. We might even strike lucky and find a photo of your ancestors themselves!
Our research focuses largely on photos in the public domain, which are free to use. We can however also assist with copyright management for certain historical photos that are subject to copyright.
On-site Dutch ancestry
research
Alongside our digital Dutch genealogy services, we offer on-site ancestry research. This includes research in institutes such as the City Archive of Amsterdam, the Dutch Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD), the National Archive in The Hague and the North-Holland Archive in Haarlem. Thanks to our office’s central location, archives in Amsterdam are easily reached by bicycle, while the National Archive in The Hague is only an hour away by train. For on-site genealogy services in other parts of the country, we utilize a broad network of historians throughout the Netherlands, which offers us the chance of researching your Dutch ancestors in local archives.
